A TRAUMATISED eSikhaleni family in Mabuyeni reserve welcomed the sentencing of their rapist grandfather at eSikhawini Regional Magistrates Court on Monday.
Hezekiah Majozi (66) from eMahlabathini was visiting his sister when he was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting his 9-year-old granddaughter in August last year.
Her niece opened a case at the police station after she witnessed him without his clothes in his two room house, with the naked victim.
The young mother, a student at the University of Zululand, told the court that she was worried when her daughter went missing and decided to check her uncle’s room.
‘I looked all over for her, but she was not with the other children. I eventually went to the two-room house where I saw him naked with my daughter behind him,’ explained the tearful mother.
The victim also testified and informed the court that he had asked her to help him search for his matches in his room before he raped her.
The subsequent investigation and medical report revealed that the young victim was sexually assaulted.
Last month the suspect appeared in court, but the case was remanded as he was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.
Throughout the trial, Majozi had maintained his innocence, but was sentenced to 18 years in prison
