Life sentence for eSikhaleni killer councilor

The well known community leader received the maximum sentence in the eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court

FORMER municipal councillor Cyprian Sipho Kweyama (50) will spend the remainder of his days behind bars after being sentenced to life imprisonment for murder on Thursday.

The well known community leader received the maximum sentence in the eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court, as did his friend and accomplice Dumisani Mthembu (52), for the killing of Thulani Mkhwanazi (34) at Port Durnford in December 2014.

The duo accused Mkhwanazi of breaking into Mthembu’s house at eMadaka and stealing his firearm.

During court proceedings, it was revealed the pair went to the victim’s house in KwaNdaya and drove him to Port Durnford where they assaulted him.

He was rushed to Ngwelezana Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The two men were initially released from police custody and continued attending the case while out on bail.

In July, however, it was learned that Kweyama had absconded, leaving Mthembu alone in the dock.

A warrant of arrest was issued and a huge manhunt was conducted to locate his whereabouts.

When police finally caught up with him, he claimed his lawyer had mixed up his court appearance dates.

The magistrate then ordered that both accused be held in police custody until the case was concluded.
