Nineteen suspects arrested for Durban bomb scares and Verulam mosque attack

During the arrests members also managed to rescue a victim who was found chained and malnourished inside a dungeon in one of the houses

NINETEEN suspects are due to appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court in connection with the discovery of several explosive devices in Durban, as well as the deadly mosque attack in Verulam.

Between March and August this year, Durban and surrounding areas were plagued by the placement of several of these devices and hoax callers.

According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks, the 19 suspects were arrested on Friday in and around Durban by a team comprising the Hawks, Crime Intelligence, Forensic Unit, the National Prosecuting Authority and other departments from the justice cluster.

During the arrests, various items were confiscated and a victim found chained and malnourished inside a dungeon in one of the houses, was rescued.

The victim is under police protection in a hospital.

The suspects are likely face charges of murder, attempted murder, extortion, kidnapping, contravention of the Explosive Act and arson.

More charges cannot be ruled out.

Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, said government deemed the incidents very serious and demanded a thorough investigation.

‘Nothing will distract or divert our attention from creating a safe and secure environment for all people of South Africa.’
