Makeover for laboratory services
Meetings are held across the province with the aim of seeking public participation and input on proposed amendments to improve governance, accountability and financial sustainability
THE KZN Health Portfolio Committee hosted a public hearing on the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS) Amendment Bill in the uMhlathuze Municipality’s auditorium last Wednesday.
Meetings are held across the province with the aim of seeking public participation and input on proposed amendments to improve governance, accountability and financial sustainability.
The amendments will enable NHLS to provide diagnostic health laboratory services in a more cost-effective and efficient manner.
‘The new funding model moves away from the inefficient fee-for-service reimbursement system and offers significant benefits for provincial health departments.
‘With regard to the core mandate of providing pathology services to the public health sector, tests will be based on current cost structures through a capitated model of reimbursement,’ the Act states.
NHLS was established in 2000 by Parliament, amalgamating the former South African Institute for Medical Research (SAIMR), National Institute for Virology, National Centre for Occupational Health and university and provincial state diagnostic laboratories.
It is the largest diagnostic pathology service in the country that supports provincial health departments and provides services to over 80% of the population through a national network of laboratories.
