Mayoral Cup games in Esikhaleni
'This time around we wanted to showcase the infrastructure in Esikhaleni'
THE City of uMhlathuze will be hosting the Mayoral Cup sporting competition at Esikhaleni today.
With the aim of developing local youth, the competition will feature 16 sporting codes, with the city’s wards grouped into clusters.
Speaking at the media launch earlier this week, mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo said the decision to play the games at eSikhaleni is a huge step.
‘We often invest in the development of infrastructure in townships and rural areas but seldom utilise it.
‘This time round we wanted to showcase the infrastructure in eSikhaleni which is almost at the same level as infrastructure in the cities,’ Mhlongo said.
He said he hoped one day these games could also be played in areas such as Ntambanana with infrastructure that compares to Richards Bay, eSikhaleni and Ngwelezana.
Mayor Mhlongo called for increased support for local sport.
He said although there might be a number of reasons why there has been a decrease in the presence of supporters at sporting fields, sport plays a huge role in nation building and the promotion of social cohesion.
Speaking on behalf of the local football associations, Abel Mdluli highlighted the importance of investing in young talent and encouraged parents to back children who have an interest in sports.
