GOVERNMENT must assist in fast-tracking the delivery of Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses, particularly in rural areas, as the population continues to grow.
This issue was highlighted at a Ward 27 War Room meeting held at Ngwelezana Auditorium, under the leadership of City of uMhlathuze Councillor Simphiwe Mzimela.
War Room Chairperson Arthur Mtshali said Ward 27 was on of the biggest in the city with a population of 10 814, incorporating both rural and urban areas.
‘While we are confronted with challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality, the issue of human habitation takes centre stage.
‘We would be happy if the government were to intervene in addressing housing backlogs.
‘As a functioning War Room, we boast numerous success stories under trying circumstances. We don’t even have a community hall, we hire tents to hold our meetings.
‘We also support needy families and have distributed 250 food parcels,’ he said.
Mtshali also expressed sadness on the many sexual abuse cases they have dealt with.
‘The latest case reported was that of a 13-year-old Grade 6 Ingweni Primary schoolgirl who was raped and is now six months pregnant while the suspect is loitering around the township freely,’ he said.
