Treatment of municipal bins questioned
Residents are urged to report mishandling of bins to the municipality for investigation
MEMBERS of the public are becoming increasingly concerned over the apparent manhandling of their rubbish bins by municipal rubbish collectors.
This results in the rubbish bins being damaged, leaving residents wondering what recourse they have.
‘I have enquired with various personnel at the municipality, but get the same message from all – that the municipality is not liable unless the bins are actually purchased from the municipality,’ said a resident.
‘I questioned the manner in which the workers handle the bins, to which I was told they are still not responsible.’
Mdu Ncalane, City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager, said the municipality has received such complaints from members of the public, and they have been investigated accordingly.

‘Each case is dealt with on its merits,’ he said.
‘We encourage members of the public to report such cases ASAP so that we continue dealing with such matters accordingly.
‘It is imperative that residents note that every case is investigated, and if there is proof that a bin was broken through mishandling, we replace it provided it is not older than five years.
‘They should also note that suppliers only give us one year warranty for such bins.
‘Our trucks are fitted with Roropress, with improved technology for handling of bins, among other things.’
Ncalane urged residents to also take care of their own bins.
