Electricity project brings relief to rural communities
Six wards will benefit from this phase one project, which is expected to be completed at the end of next month
RURAL communities in Hlabisa and Hluhluwe will benefit from a R15-million rand electrification project announced by the Big5 Hlabisa Municipality.
The two areas have a history of underdevelopment.
Unveiling the project last week, Mayor Velenkosini Hlabisa said the project comes at the right time, adding that electrification of thousands of households was already underway.
‘Six wards will benefit from this phase one project, which is expected to be completed at the end of next month (September).
‘Our main aim is to reduce the number of non-electrified houses in the uMkhanyakude District.

‘Once phase one has been completed, we will announce a second phase project in collaboration with Eskom to electrify all remaining wards.
‘We want to ensure that no household is without electricity because electricity boosts community development.’
The project was welcomed by the rural communities.
One beneficiary, Dudu Mthembu of the Newlands area, said she was grateful to see the project tasking off since she has been living in the dark for years.
