Sponsors sought to help curb feral cat breeding
'Numerous cats living in and around local businesses have been sterilised during our campaigns'
THE high feral cat population in Brackenham and Aquadene have been brought to the attention of Project Feral Cat, which is now appealing for sponsorships to curb the over-breeding of the animals in these areas.
Brackenham resident Selvan Naidoo said the number of feral cats are on the increase in the suburb, having encountered more strays in around his home in recent months.
Concerned about inbreeding, dog attacks, poisoning and the general safety of the animals, he lodged an appeal with Project Feral Cat.

‘I have had one of the cats vaccinated against rabies, but it is costly to have the sterilisation procedure done.
‘The cats take shelter here because we do not have any dogs and they feel safe.
‘While we take care of them and feed them, we would like them to be sterilised to prevent further breeding.
‘We even have one cat that refuses to leave, and has made itself at home.
‘As someone who has worked in wildlife conservation, I am passionate about saving animals and believe Project Feral Cat can make a difference in our area,’ said Naidoo.
Heilke Ackerman of Project Feral Cat, says the project is a voluntary-run organisation and relies on sponsorships and donations.

‘We would like to carry out more sterilisation campaigns in several areas, but need the support of businesses and community members.
‘Numerous cats living in and around local businesses have been sterilised during our campaigns.
‘As well as being trapped, sterilised, ear-tipped (for identification) and released, each cat is given a rabies vaccination and flea medication.’
