Power restored to Richards Bay CBD
Municipal electricians worked through the night at the Scorpio substation
POWER in Richards Bay CBD was restored timeously this morning after a substation blowout led to a city-wide blackout.
The Scorpio substation next to South 32’s Hillside operation short-circuited at about 2am today (Friday), reportedly resulting in a large explosion and fire.

The entire CBD was affected but power restored by 8.30am.
Surrounding suburbs including Aquadene, Arboretum, Birdswood, Brackenham and Veldenvlei were also affected.
By 9am today, some affected suburbs’ power had been restored, but not all.
