Are faith and science incompatible?

A discussion in Richards Bay this week aims to address controversial topics

Evolution, the creation, faith and biology will be the topics to be discussed at the University of Zululand Science Centre in Richards Bay on Wednesday.

Forming part of National Science Week, an annual week initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, the discussion will be led by a number of respected names within the science world with the aim of helping teachers, students and the public in general better understand the perceived conflicts around creation, evolution and faith.

Professor Mike Bruton, who has had an adventurous career as an ichthyologist and science educator in Africa and beyond, will be one of the main speakers at the discussion.

Although he is best known for his research on the coelacanth, he has also worked extensively on the life strategies of freshwater fishes.

He headed the Ichthyology Institute (Grahamstown), worked at the Natural History Museum (London) and headed the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town.

Recent experiences saw him working as an informal science educator in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and establishing various Science Centres in SA and overseas.

Dr Derek Fish, who has been running the Unizulu Science Centre in Richards Bay for more than 27 years, will also participate in the discussion.

His passion is presenting science and mathematics to children in a way which encourages curiosity and inspires them to study further.

He has given popular science talks all over the world and is passionate about bridging the perceived divide between science and faith.

To this end he has presented science talks in churches all over South Africa.

Both speakers have been awarded the National Science and Technology Foundation Award for the best individual contribution to science and technology in SA.
