Phongolo senior citizens celebrate 102 years
Their birthday celebrations coincided with the Mandela Day programme

YOUNG people must respect their parents and by doing so, they will live long.
That’s the advice from 102-year-old gogo Lesiya Ntshangase from Shoba Reserve in Pongola.
She was celebrating her birthday together with that of the ‘younger’ gogo Henrietta Malinga (101) on Wednesday at Shoba Tribal Court.
Ntshangase said respect and the fear of God is what keeps her going.
‘The bible says we must respect our parents so that God can give us more days in this world,’ said Ntshangase.
Both Ntshangase and Malinga were showered with gifts from the Pongola Municipal Mayor, Cllr Winnie Nhlabathi.
The two elderly women can hardly walk and most of the time they use their wheelchairs to move around.
Their birthday celebrations coincided with the Mandela Day programme.
‘We bought them birthday cakes and groceries and we also visited five wards planting trees and doing cleaning.
‘We went to ward 5 where we finished up the building of the house of gogo Kheswa, who lives with her 10 grandchildren.
‘We handed over food parcels, a new bed and blankets with the help of ward councillor NT Mavimbela, who mobilised community members,’ said mayor Nhlabathi.
