Zululand needy communities uplifted

Zikalala launched his Mandela Month programme two weeks ago in Ndwedwe at an event attended by hundreds of people

AS part of Mandela Day celebrations in uMhlabuyalingana in northern KZN, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the private sector joined forces to uplift their local community.

Spearheaded by the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and led by uMkhanyakude Champion MEC Sihle Zikalala, essential items were donated to Phumelela Mntwana Crèche for children with disabilities.

The programme also gave residents, especially the elderly, the opportunity to undergo free eye tests, as well as giving them access to more information on social grants.

‘When I requested my office develop our Mandela Month programme, I made it clear that I needed a programme that would have a positive impact on people’s lives,’ said Zikalala.

‘That is why we have mobilised government, NGOs, and the private sector to provide essential services.’

All attendees were helped to apply for new social grant cards and were given free eye tests.

Those with eye problems were immediately referred to clinics for follow-up treatment.
