Government delivers on its mandate says Ramaphosa
'Many young people went to school on empty stomachs, but we have provided schools with feeding schemes'
DESPITE a few challenges, the South African government has delivered on the mandate given to it by its electorate in terms of basic services.
So said President Cyril Ramaphosa during his recent visit to Empangeni.
‘The government you elected into power has tried everything in its power to manage the affairs of the nation, dating back from the era of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and even today.
‘The reality is that our government inherited a mess. This government found there were eight million people employed in our economy and today there are 16 million.
‘Many young people went to school on empty stomachs, but we have provided schools with feeding schemes.
‘We have opened the doors of learning.
‘When critics judge us they must do so against the backdrop of where we came from. The truth of the matter is that no government has managed to build four million houses in 24 years.
‘We had been burying people every day because of HIV/Aids. We intervened and said this could not be allowed to go on. We then started a programme of rolling out anti-retroviral (ARV) medication, so that we can give life to our people.
‘Today we have 43 000 people who are on ARVs and our target is to reach seven million.
‘That in my view is a caring government that listens to the concerns of the people and respond,’ he said.
