Crime on the rise in Ngwelezana
Speaking at the City of uMhlathuze Ward 27 War Room meeting, Empangeni police Captain B Dludla said communities must become actively involved in crime combatting initiatives
POLICE are concerned about escalating crime activities in Ngwelezana and surrounding areas and have appealed to local communities to take a stand.
Speaking at the City of uMhlathuze Ward 27 War Room meeting, Empangeni police Captain B Dludla said communities must become actively involved in crime combatting initiatives.
He mentioned areas such Umhlanga Reserve, Isigisi, Newtown, Macekane and Ngwelezana A and B Section as areas with the highest crime incidents, especially robberies.
‘I can safely say that Ngwelezana is now competing with eSikhaleni in terms of high crime rates.
‘Traditionally Nseleni and surrounding areas have been known for the highest number of crimes, but that has changed drastically with Ngwelezana now having overtaken it.This is a cause for concern.
‘We as police officers are committed to doing our work, but we need society to partner with us.
‘We need the community to come forward and revive street committees, neighbourhood watches and community policing forums,’ Dludla said.
Cllr Simphiwe Mzimela said he would be happy to see police patrolling in all the crime hot spots, especially during the early hours of the morning when most robbery cases occur.
