Authorities preventing Mtubatuba road collapse

ROADSIDE erosion in Mtubatuba is causing some concern among residents and motorists who have visions of the road collapsing and swallowing a vehicle as it did in 2015.
The P237 in the vicinity of the Pick n Pay intersection was in 2015 closed for seven weeks when the road unexpectedly collapsed, taking with it a Quantum taxi.
The current erosion problem has occurred about 20m from the site of the 2015 sinkhole and authorities are acting quickly to prevent a similar disaster.
‘We have visited the site and work began on Friday,’ said a representative of the Department of Transport Hluhluwe Cost Centre.
‘It should take about seven or eight working days to complete.

‘The erosion is caused by storm water and our plan is to construct a drain capable of handling the volume of water so this road does not collapse again.’
Mdu Mahlinza, Communications Manager at Mtubatuba Municipality, said the matter had been reported to the provincial department about two months ago.
‘We are not entirely sure where this water is coming from and cannot point fingers without knowing for sure, but the recent heavy rains have contributed.
‘We need help from the provincial government to fix all the damage caused by the rain and have written to the COGTA MEC appealing for help.’
Mahlinza said other roads in the area that do fall within the local municipality’s remit are in very bad condition from the recent rains, but that service providers are fixing them.
‘Mtubatuba Municipality has a very good relationship with its service providers and as a result, they have all come on board to fix the roads worst affected.’
