Zululand youth soccer team march to tournament final
Local soccer players secure their spot in the finals of the Steven Pienaar soccer tournament
THE U19 soccer squad consisting of promising players from Mtuba Football Academy, Bay United FC and various other teams from Richards Bay and surrounding areas, surpassed all expectations by reaching the final round of the prestigious Steven Pienaar annual soccer tournament held in Gauteng last weekend.
Playing good quality, attacking football, the team got through the group stages by drawing one and winning three of their four matches, while scoring seven goals and conceding none in the process.
This set up a quarter-final clash with Braam City FC, who they easily beat 3-0 .
The semi-final clash against tournament favourites Justified Crew FC was a high tempo, hard-fought encounter.
The visitors however, managed to weather the storm and gradually take control of the game, eventually scoring the solitary goal that would win them the game.
They are now through to the final which will be played on 17 of June at the Westbury Stadium in Gauteng, and taking another trip up to Gauteng in such a short space of time obviously creates a huge financial challenge.
Coach Sheldon Hughes thanked all the donors who made the first trip possible and humbly requests the assistance of the business community and all other relevant stakeholders to make this one a possibility as well.
Anyone willing to assist can contact Hughes on 076 8739927 or Milton Smith on 072 2847111.
