COMMUNITY activism, in particular raising awareness about the evils of women and child abuse, is Jan Mabuyakhulu’s reason for being, but after being mugged at knifepoint on Sunday, his faith in humanity is beginning to wane.
‘On Friday I began my annual Mtubatuba to Durban walk and had just arrived in Richards Bay when I was mugged at the taxi rank,’ he said.
‘It was about 5pm and five men grabbed me from behind, pulling me by my banner that I had around my neck.
‘They had knives and tried to stab me, but I managed to fight them off.’

They stole his backpack containing his cell phone, the little bit of money he had, his ID card and they also took his banner.
As a result, Jan’s walk will be delayed as he has had to make his way back to Mtubatuba to arrange a new ID card and get his other backpack and extra clothes.
Every year Jan walks from Mtubatuba to Durban, speaking at various schools and municipal events en route.
He finishes his walk on 16 June, in time to attend the annual Youth Day celebration in Durban.
If anyone is able to assist Jan with extra clothes or particularly accommodation for the remainder of his walk to Durban, contact Tamlyn Jolly at the Richards Bay Zululand Observer office.
