TWO officers of the Rapid Rail Police Unit (RRPU) in Durban were sentenced in the Richards Bay Magistrates Court on Tuesday to five years imprisonment, wholly suspended with conditions, for corruption and accepting a benefit.
Cst Bhekikhaya Mjiyakho (34) and Cst Ravendran Govender (40) were charged following Mjiyakho’s arrest in a sting operation by the Hawks in 2015.
The RRPU was in Richards Bay for special operations and arrested seven Tanzanians on charges of possession of narcotics.
Cst Govender thereafter ordered Mjiyakha to collect money from a relative of one of the men in custody.
The Hawks swooped down on Mjiyakha in late June, after he demanded payment of R1 000 from a Tanzanian citizen for the release of his brother.
The man however reported to investigating officer, Warrant Officer Ryno Louw that the police arrested his brother and other Tanzanians on unknown charges and demanded payment.
While being interviewed, the policeman phoned the man again, ordering him to bring the money to a CBD fast food outlet within five minutes.
The Hawks swiftly arranged a special operation and arrested Mjiyakha, with his police service pistol, police identification and a packet of heroin in his possession.
