Inkosi challenges youth to be self employed

'We have the ability to do things for ourselves such as registering co-operatives which would in turn result in the job creation'

THE head of Mhlana Traditional Authority, Inkosi Mbusowabathethwa Mthethwa has challenged unemployed youth to do something to change their socioeconomic status, by establishing cooperatives.

He was speaking at the sod turning event for Thuthuka Joe86 Agricultural Primary Cooperative, held last week at Mpemvu Reserve, under uMfolozi Municipality.

He said it was time for young people to rise up and do things for themselves, instead of waiting for government.

‘As society, we can’t continue using government as a scapegoat all the time. The reality is that we are not doing anything to meet the government halfway.

‘We have the ability to do things for ourselves such as registering co-operatives which would in turn result in the job creation.

‘As traditional leaders we remain instrumental in unlocking rural development and employment opportunities. We have the land which our youth should be using to develop themselves and their families.

‘I’m happy that we are launching this poultry farming project today, founded by young people with a hope that they will take it to greater heights,’ he said.

According to Tom Buthelezi, who is the Manager of Umbele Development Savings Trust, which has invested a large amount of money in rural communities, the project will have 30 000 chickens and is likely to create about 15 jobs for local youth.

Last year alone Umbele invested R50 000 in the Mhlana Traditional Authority, out of their 2016/2017 R450 000 budget.

‘Our contribution here as Umbele was to donate money for the cleaning of the six hectares of land, which will be used in this project.’
