Visual stories have an impact
uThungulu Community Foundation held a story-telling workshop for local NPOs
STORY-TELLING is an ideal way for NPOs and NGOs to bring to the fore the work they do, to attract donor involvement and to share their successes.
These were the sentiments of uThungulu Community Foundation (UCF) CEO, Simphiwe Mbatha.
The foundation recently hosted a workshop, driven by young people, for local NPOs and NGOs to learn about the power of story-telling and social media, in order to share the work they do in the communities.
‘NPOs are very important players in developing societies, they are at the grass-roots level of understanding and addressing societal issues,’ said Mbatha.
‘In many cases, work of NPOs is hardly recognised and appreciated by the communities within which they work.
‘Some people even find it difficult to believe that individuals can just volunteer and work for nothing, for the benefit of humanity.’
Mbatha said that working or volunteering for an NPO provides opportunities to make a difference and bring about change.
‘For an NPO to have a meaningful contribution, it needs support from the communities and donors.
‘To get donors’ support, it needs to have a clear goal and objectives of its cause and its goal needs to resonate with the interests of its donors.’
‘Telling meaningful stories allows individual donors to connect with the storyteller and draw parallels in their lives.
‘Highlighting the impact of NPOs’ intervention on identified social problems is essential.
‘With social media technology, visual stories can be more effective.’
