This month is going pear-shaped

June is World Avocado Month

IT is that time of year again when one of the favourite fruits among South Africans – the avocado pear – is in season and at its best.

And what more fitting a time than to dedicate a month to this most healthy of fruits.

The World Avocado Association (WAO), of which South Africa is a member, has dedicated June to the awesome avocado.

With more potassium than bananas and loaded with vitamins, protein, heart-healthy mono-unsaturated fatty acids, as well as powerful antioxidants that can help protect the eyes, the avo truly is a ‘super fruit’.

While the WAO has this year planned events ranging from serving avo cocktails at the Bastille Day Garden Party in France to avo’ale, avo fries and smashed avocados in London pubs, there are many ways for us in South Africa to pay homage to this scrumptious food so readily available on our streets and in our shops.

Here are four oh-so-yummy and easy ways to include the mighty avocado in everyday meals.

1. For those curry lovers who find it difficult to stomach the hot stuff, diced avo in tomato and onion sambals will help cool off even the hottest of Durban curries.

2. Avo-topped steak

Mash two or three avos with lime juice, finely chopped spring onions, a deseeded chopped tomato, one clove of chopped garlic and a few splashes of Tabasco sauce. Add a few dollops to your braaied steak.

3. Scrumptious nachos with zesty guacamole

To make the guacamole, halve two of the avocados and remove the stones. Slide a dessertspoon between the skin and the flesh of each avocado half and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Add the lime zest and half the juice, the coriander, half the soured cream and a pinch of salt. Mash well until you have a smooth guacamole, then cover and chill until ready to serve.
