Eshowe doctor remembered as an exemplary cadre

IT was a sombre day as the memorial service of 29-year-old Doctor, Ndyeboyesizwe Julius Nondonga, took place at the Eshowe Hospital yesterday.

Dr Nondonga lost his life when his vehicle got involved in a head-on collision with a truck on the uThukela bridge between Mandeni and KwaDukuza on the N2 highway last week.

At the memorial service, held at Eshowe Hospital, some of Dr Nondonga’s colleagues described him as a dedicated, compassionate and a hard working doctor.

CEO of Eshowe Hospital Mr Nhlanhla Sangweni said Nondonga was one of the best doctors at the hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit.

‘He was always prepared to lend a hand, he was respectful. He was a hard working doctor and he was friendly to the patients.’

KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said the loss of a medical doctor is always a huge loss to the country.
He sent his deepest condolences to Eshowe staff and the bereaved family.

‘Here at eShowe Hospital we mourn another tragic loss of a young man Dr Ndyeboyesizwe Julius Nondonga who actually contributed his life to this hospital.

‘Before working at eShowe, he was at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital.

‘Even though he comes from the Eastern Cape, he spent all his time and his life in KwaZulu-Natal, and for that we are greatly humbled.

‘We mourn this loss because he was very young, 29 years of age.

‘When we lose doctors who are this young we feel the pain because we still had expected him to contribute for many more decades.

‘The pain that we feel as the Department, however, cannot be equated to the pain of his family because for them he was a son, a child who grew up with them and who realised his dream and became a doctor.

‘He was a symbol of breaking the chain of poverty in his family, before he could come and help us by giving us a service in the country.

‘We send our deepest condolences to the family,’ Dhlomo said.

Dr Nondonga leaves behind his parents, three siblings, a fiancé and a young son.

He will be laid to rest at UMthatha, Elangeni AA section on tomorrow, 26 May 2018.
