N2 interchange completion in 2019

The R1.4-billion N2 upgrade between Mtunzini and Empangeni commenced in 2016

MOTORISTS are mere months away from using the doubled section of the N2 between Mtunzini and eSikhaleni, presently under construction.

This includes the bridge over the John Ross Parkway, which for some time has created peak hour traffic chaos.

The R1.4-billion N2 upgrade between Mtunzini and Empangeni commenced in 2016.

‘The next phase is the opening of the new northbound carriageway to traffic between the Mtunzini and the eSikhaleni interchanges,’ said Eastern Region Project Manager for the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), Corné Roux.

Roux noted that the completion date for the project is May 2019 and added that the contact will also include the upgrade of the existing stretch of the N2 between Empangeni and Mtunzini, upon completion of the new interchange.

‘At present, 420 people from within the local area are employed on site.

‘The current upgrade contract includes the construction of a new carriageway to become the future northbound carriageway while the existing road will become the south bound carriageway.

‘The existing road will therefore be repaired and receive an asphalt overlay as part of the contract,’ said Roux.
