In the early hours of 27 March, a legend of his own making, Petrus Jacobus Viviers, went peacefully into the light.
Many came to know him as Oom Piet.
His reputation as an exceptional skipper preceded him, as well as the stories of heroic rescues and the tragic events that took place in July 1975 – an event seared into his memory and which continued to haunt him throughout his life occurred when his boat was destroyed after being hit by a freak storm.
But through all of the trials, the hardships, challenges and disappointments, Piet stood tall.
He was never discouraged or slowed down. He was humble and giving to the last.
Piet shared his roof with strangers, helping the lost and weary find new hope and strength.
In remembrance of a hero, a legend, family and friends in St Lucia will be celebrating his life on 12 May.
All who knew and loved Piet are welcome to attend.
