Free basic computer skills for rural communities

Zululand rural youth empowered by a 10-day free computer course in Empangeni

TO empower Zululand youth, especially in rural communities, the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) started a free end-user computing course in Empangeni on Tuesday.

Based inside the Sanlam Centre in Empangeni, the ten-day programme offers basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word and Excel, PowerPoint as well as basic internet use.

This ongoing community project targets unemployed youth from rural areas such as Ntambanana, KwaMthethwa and others.

Teamwork – Smangelke Mthimkhulu, Ashley Mzimela (teacher), Thandeka Nzuza and Zodwa Mchunu

It is supported by other community NGOs, with the aim of ensuring the youth improve their education and receive necessary skills to seek employment.

‘We are excited to be part of such a positive project which will equip our communities. When they approached the centre about hosting this worthy initiative, the least we could do was to offer them the facility for training,’ said Sanlam Centre Empangeni Manager Julie Ishwar.

Partnering on a computer project are Khanyisani Mkhize and Londiwe Qwabe

‘This course could have cost them R7 000, but they are now getting education for free and empowering themselves,’ she said.
