A VISION of Empangeni High School learners competing in the global market and having exposure to the international arena is what drives newly elected EHS principal, Sizwe Zwane.
Zwane, a qualified environmental officer – a career he opts pursuing part time for the near future – was this week officially announced as EHS principal while Martinus Versveld will take on the job of second in charge after being elected Deputy Principal.
Having been born in Newcastle, Zwane’s family relocated to the small town of Carolina in Mpumalanga.
It was there where he matriculated from Zinikeleni Secondary School, obtaining a 94 percent mark in mathematics.
Zwane then shifted his focus to tertiary education after he was awarded a bursary by the Mpumalanga Provincial government to study at the University of Zululand.
Whilst currently in the process of obtaining his Master’s degree in Educational Management, Zwane already holds a BSc degree in Environmental Management and a BSc Honours degree in Geography from UNIZULU as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from UNISA.

He began his career in education as a mathematics teacher and choir conductor at Zinikeleni High School where he led the school choir to the provincial finals.
Zwane thereafter taught Social Sciences at Thokoluhle High School where he again was in charge of conducting the school choir.
During his spell at Birdswood Secondary School, where he taught Life Sciences, Zwane led the schools choir to three national championships.
In 2016 he was appointed as the mathematics HOD at Empangeni High and was last year elected the Acting Deputy Principal.
He also worked as a part time Geography lecturer at the University of Zululand.
‘My vision that I will share with all stakeholders is to see Empangeni High School becoming not just the best school in Zululand but in the province, if not all South Africa,’ he said.
The engaged father of two said his aim is to continue to ensure a high standard of academia, sports and culture at EHS.
‘Moving forward we plan on introducing innovations such as e-learning, moving towards a paperless classroom concept, but more importantly we will continue producing good all round results.’
Zwane said a good school must be able to produce quality results and give learners equal opportunities.
‘EHS remains an English and Afrikaans school servicing the greater community of Zululand and KZN at large.
‘Hence, we will strive to maintain the good relations with various stakeholders which include Universities, KZN Youth Choir, KZN Youth Wing Band, Sports Unions, ex scholars and former staff members,’ he said.
