KleinJan determined to pin down Commonwealth medal

KleinJan ready for epic battle

AFTER winning South Africa’s first senior African Championship gold medal earlier this year in Port Harcourt (Nigeria), Richards Bay wrestler KleinJan Combrinck will now step up onto one of the world’s largest stages when he competes in the men’s freestyle under 57kg division tomorrow (Thursday) at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The talented Zululander fights will televised on channel 214 between 2.25am to 5.30am local time.

The 23-year-old has had to put his financial management studies on hold to chase his Olympic dream, with the Commonwealth Games serving as a stepping stone to his ultimate goal.

Combrinck started wrestling at age seven and is one of South Africa’s most decorated wrestlers, with 31 national titles across all divisions under his belt.

KleinJan beat Nigeria’s Ebikewenimo Welson to take gold at the African champs. Welson is a two-time Commonwealth Games silver medalist and will be one of the contenders at tomorrow’s event.

Wrestlers standing between Combrinck and the gold medal are Steven Takahashi (Canada), Ebikewenimo Welson (Nigeria), Viorel Etko (Scotland), Divoshan Charles Fernando (Sri Lanka), Ross Connelly (Scotland), Muhammed Bilal (Pakistan), Gary Giordmaina (Malata ), Lowe Bingham (Nauru), Thomas Cicchini (Australia), Rahul Aware (India) and George Ramm (England).
