FACES – Tackling women issues through theatre
Women issues will come alive during the showcase of a theatre production, FACES in Empangeni next month
A POWERFUL story about a woman with emotional scars will come alive during the nerve-tingling theatre production, FACES at Empangeni Civic Centre on Tuesday, 8 and Wednesday, 9 May.
All forms of abuse will be exposed and interrogated when local actress Nothando Mabaso portrays several roles during this influential piece one-hander which waves a flag at issues of identity.
It is a story written and directed by Zimbabwean-born Unizulu creative arts lecture Gift Marovatsanga, and produced under the emerging King Cetshwayo Theatrical Society (KCTS).
‘Faces is a story about the issues women face, by virtue of them simply being women in a world where men continue to dictate the pace,’ said Marovatsanga.

‘It’s a story about how every human being has a responsibility to make the world a better place.
‘It plays on the notion of identity and change and at its core. The play questions every individual as to how they construct their true identity.
‘The piece forces viewers to look inside themselves and face their own demons before judging and labelling others,’ he said.
According to Marovatsanga, the story teller creates distance and hides from the ‘illusion’ of being a ‘mad woman’, allowing the viewer the privilege of assuming sanity yet creating a safe space for the viewer to identify and reflect from a distance, hiding in their self-consciousness.
Portraying the role of Faces is well-known theatre actress Nothando Mabaso.
This mother of three with a BA degree in Drama has been part of several theatre productions and last year took her talent to central Harare in Zimbabwe.
After the Zululand showcase, the production will be on the road to Zimbabwe where the role of Faces will be portrayed by Zimbabwean actress.
