IN a significant increase on last year, 10 yachts, including a Durban entry and a couple of international sailors, participated in this year’s Inhaca Island to Richards Bay race, an annual event organised by the Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC).
After a cruising sail up the coast, the race got underway on Thursday.

An eventful race with blustery conditions in parts, saw line honours taken, after one day, three hours and 22 minutes, by Durban entry Southern Storm, which was helmed and skippered by Warren Clark.
Second in the racing division, just eight minutes after the first placed boat was Alacrity, skippered by David Taylor.
Third across the line in the racing division, in a time of one day, 12 hours and 22 minutes, was Nomad, skippered by Craig Deverson.

In the rally division, in a time of one day, four hours and 33 minutes, Alkistis skippered by Greg Donkin crossed the line first, with Don Voysey’s Zeus coming in three hours later.
Third place in the rally division was taken by Bully, skippered by Neville Hall-Reace.
Thanking all involved for their hard work, commitment and good sportsmanship, ZYC’s Rear Commodore Sailing, Kirsten Schreuder said the turnout for this year’s race was much improved on last year and that it was special to have seen a resurgence in entries.
The only international yacht race to be held in South Africa, the Inhaca to Richards Bay race is in its 25th year.
