Transnet team blitzes local school playgrounds

It was as though a friendly red ant army had invaded the premises when a group of more than 60 Transnet employees descended on a pre-school in Ward 6, Mzingazi

IT was as though a friendly red ant army had invaded the premises when a group of more than 60 Transnet employees descended on a pre-school in Ward 6, Mzingazi on Tuesday morning.

Armed with equipment, tools, paints, brushes and a host of other paraphernalia, the group wasted no time in building, renovating, cleaning and sprucing up the Sibusisiwe Early Child Development Centre, much to the delight of its supervisor, Thabisile Elvia Mlotshwa.

‘The school was established way back in 1992 and we have now far outgrown the original building which has also suffered the effects of time,’ said Thabisile.

‘From a modest first intake, we now have 215 children in our care, many of whom have single parent mothers.

‘As a registered NPO we are able to ensure the children receive the best possible care, attention and learning.

‘Our 14 staff members include eight educators, two cooks, two caregivers and two cleaners, as well as security staff to make sure they are always safe.’

Thabisile praised the Transnet effort, which will make a huge difference to the school environment.

‘We feel so blessed. It is only through such good will that we can thrive and produce quality learners.

‘Many of our past children are now adults and have qualified as doctors, engineers and the like, which makes us very proud.’

Transnet Port Terminals representative Mfundo Ndwandwe said the work group came from various Transnet divisions and all had volunteered their services.

‘Transnet identified Richards Bay as a priority location for its Community Social Investment projects and employee participation brings it all together.’
