TEARS of joy rolled down the faces of Ekwethabeni Lutheran Church congregants in Ngwelezana when their new church building was officially opened on Sunday by Bishop Absalom Mnisi.
Since 1997 church members had to use a classroom at Thanduyise High School to conduct their services.
Speaking at the opening of the R3.8-million building, the church’s Council Chairperson Sabelo Mabaso praised all who contributed financially to finally complete the project.
‘We are grateful for having our own church building in which we can now worship freely, but special credit must go to one of our leaders, Jotham Mtshali, who made the first donation of R20 000.
The occasion was also used to salute former Ngwelezana Mayor, the late Rev Hosea Fakude, for his tireless effort in ensuring that a site was made available for the church. After securing the land, a sod-turning ceremony was held in 2016 by Bishop Phembukuthula Buthelezi to mark the commencement of the project.
