Bhejane Reserve community up in arms over road upgrades

These words were directed at Ward 6 Councillor Joseph Ndimande on Friday by Bhejane Reserve residents protesting against empty promises about road upgrades in their area

‘ENOUGH is enough! We have been waiting for so long for you to bring the officials from the Department of Transport to tell us why we are neglected.’

These words were directed at Ward 6 Councillor Joseph Ndimande on Friday by Bhejane Reserve residents protesting against empty promises about road upgrades in their area.

The residents demand that the P499 be upgraded as they claim the road becomes near impassable during rainy days.

They say at previous meetings with local authorities, during which they raised their concerns and emphasised the need for the road to be tarred, Ndimande promised to bring Department of Transport officials to address them about their demands. This did not happen.

During Friday’s protest scores of children were prevented from attending school as the road was completely blocked with burning tyres and logs.

Ndimande said he understood the community’s frustrations and their grievances were valid, but requested them to stop the protest.

After a long conversation in the middle of the road, residents agreed to grant Ndimande seven days to get Department of Transport officials to address the community.
