Inkosi urges authorities to prioritise education

iNkosi Thanda Mzimela of the Emanzimeleni clan has challenged the authorities and the Department of Education not to undermine teachers

INKOSI Thanda Mzimela of the Emanzimeleni clan has challenged the authorities and the Department of Education not to undermine teachers, but treat them with respect and dignity as they are doing crucial work.

Speaking at Ezakheleni High School at Oyemeni near Mtunzini on Tuesday during a school uniform, desks and sanitary pads handover to 12 schools by the Department of Correctional Service, Mzimela said education is the number one priority.

‘When I think about development, the first thing that comes into my mind is education and not issues such as water and electricity.

‘Even those connecting electricity started at school, and it was teachers who ensured they are capable of doing their job,’ said Mzimela.

Empangeni Correctional Services also handed over a classroom which was renovated by inmates.

Area Commissioner Zodwa Mthethwa said while they were doing schools assessment last year, they discovered that uniforms and desks were still needed in some schools.

King Cetshwayo District Director of Education, David Chonco, said he was excited when he received an invitation to engage with the Department of Correctional Services last year.

‘We are grateful for this donation. It will go a long way in changing the lives of our learners,’ he said.
