WATCH: Unhappy lifeguards in weekend stayaway

Richards Bay lifeguards ‘downed towels’ over the weekend

AFTER reportedly not being paid overtime owing them after working extra hours over the summer holidays, Richards Bay lifeguards ‘downed towels’ over the weekend.

The protest action could not have come at a worse time, as Alkantstrand beach was crowded with thousands of members of the Jericho Church in Zion, who were on their annual pilgrimage to the city.

Fortunately, surf conditions were relatively safe and Sunday’s miserable weather also kept many would-be bathers out of the water.

Beach manager Cyril Mkhize and City of uMhlathuze Chief Sport and Recreation Officer, Shakier Hiraman kept watch over the beach and fortunately no bather incidents were reported.

The lifeguards were back at work on Monday.
