WEATHER: Heavy rains and flooding predicted for parts of the region tomorrow

Gale force SW'ly winds (35-45KT) is forecast off shore along the KZN coast from tomorrow morning

THE South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued out a weather watch for various parts of northern KZN for tomorrow.

According to a statement released by SAWS heavy rain is expected over is expected over parts of Mandeni, King Cetshwayo, Eastern Zululand, uMkhanyakude areas.

‘Severe thunderstorms are expected on Saturday (24 February) over the south-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal and north-eastern parts of Free State Province.

‘Heavy rain leading to flooding is expected on Sunday (25 February) in places over KwaZulu-Natal, the eastern parts of Mpumalanga and the Limpopo Province.

‘This follows a combination of on-shore flow along our eastern and north-eastern parts, together with a well-defined upper air system is expected to deliver significant rainfall leading to flooding in places over parts of the KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces on Sunday.’

SAWS has further cautioned members of the public to be vigilant in areas that are prone to flooding.

‘The public should therefore remain vigilant and aware of the danger of localized urban flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and especially where the environment is modified by tarred roads and brick or concrete paving.

‘Moreover, under such circumstances, the public are strongly discouraged from crossing low-water bridges, either on foot or in vehicles. In both cases there is the very real danger of being swept off the bridge, due to the extreme lateral force of floodwaters.’
