A large number of local players exchanged moves in the time controlled rated tournament

‘STRATEGICAL board’ masterminds gathered at Richards Bay High School over the weekend to participate in a series of battles, whilst competing in the 2018 King Cetshwayo Summer Open Chess tournament.

In the U10 section, Liam Reddy reigned supreme, followed by Josh Singh in second and Sharavan Singh in third.

Grantham Park Primary School’s Saien Segadevan (10) proved unbeatable playing out of his age group, taking the U12 section after winning all his games.

Rorisang Mabaso came in at second spot, with, Jessy Wynne ending third.

The U14 section was tightly contested, but saw Arya Singh take the title in the end, followed by Jamie Moodley and Jurina Moodley.

Former Grantham Park Primary School pupil Tlhoni Tsotetsi utilised his years of experience at primary and provincial level to snatch the U16 crown, with Liam Moonsamy taking home silver and Mongezi Shoba the bronze.

After utilising a number of successful strategies, Nikash Baboolal took the U18 title, with Manelisa Sithole claiming second spot and Philasande Qwabe third.

The U20 section saw Lundi Shoba emerge victorious, followed by Luyanda Biyela in second and Phumlani Mathe in third.

Ryan Coetzee managed to hold his own in the adult section to take the title, with Lungelo Mthembu coming in second and Brandon Coetzee in third.

Participants will prepare for the King Cetswayo Anniversary Tournament, which takes place on 17 to 18 March at Richards Bay High School.
