WATCH: Substation explosion plunges parts of Richards Bay into darkness

Power went out just after midday and was briefly restored before the explosion at about 12.45pm

Alton will be without electricity for about the next four hours after a mini-substation in the vicinity of ZCBF’s gate three exploded and burnt out earlier today (Wednesday).

uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue arrived on scene immediately and extinguished the blaze before it got out of control.

City of uMhlathuze officials are working to restore power to the affected area.

Motorists are urged to exercise caution at the intersection of Alumina Allee and South Central Arterial as these traffic lights have also been affected.
