WHILE South Africans are planning being covered in flowers and jewellery on Valentine’s Day, it’s important to remember that there’s one more thing that needs covering.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) is International Condom Day – yes, there’s a day for that.
A recent campaign found that youth between the ages of 18 and 24 admitted to having unprotected sex occasionally and that condoms were seen as ‘uncool’.
The Aids Healthcare Foundation (AHF) last year conducted research among the youth of various commumities and were shocked to find that a large percentage of youth learn about sex on porn sites or through information from friends, which would be inaccurate 80% of the time.

‘Our key message remains that condoms are ‘always in fashion’, regardless of how long you have been with and how well you think you know your intimate partner. Condom use is critical,’ says Hilary Thulare of AHF South Africa.
‘Condom usage not only prevents the chances of pregnancy, but also prevents sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/Aids and reduces the risk of cervical cancer and wart-causing human papilloma virus (HPV) in women.
‘Governments and international health agencies are slashing funds in terms of promoting condom use.
‘This will most likely lead to more infections worldwide, but thankfully International Condom Day is a way to reinvigorate the message that condoms are a fun and fashionable way to protect oneself and one’s partner,’ said Thulare.
