Takata airbags – the brands which recalled

Last month Toyota SA recalled 700 000 vehicles and in December 2017 a US teen died in a Honda Civic after what investigators described as a 'minor automobile accident'

THE Takata airbag ‘scandal’ has been ongoing for years and is still not over, with the latest ‘victims’ being Toyota and Honda.

Last month Toyota SA recalled 700 000 vehicles and in December 2017 a US teen died in a Honda Civic after what investigators described as a ‘minor automobile accident’.

Huma Hanif died within a matter of seconds as the Takata airbag inflator inside the steering wheel of her 2002 Honda Civic exploded, launching shrapnel at her from mere feet away.

A piece of metal cut her neck causing her to bleed to death shortly after the low-speed collision.

Hanif was the 11th person to die from injuries suffered as a result of a defective Takata airbag.

Hundreds more around the world have been injured by the exploding inflators.

The latest brand in SA to call on owners to take their cars for a checkup is Subaru, which says 2 068 vehicles are effected.

Subaru SA is urging customers to visit the recall page on the Subaru SA website, and to insert their vehicle’s VIN number into the VIN checker field to find out if their vehicle is part of this recall.

If it is, customers will be directed to a form asking for their contact information and their preferred dealership, after which Subaru will make contact with the customers to book their vehicles in for a service.

Subaru says the effected cars are the WRX (2004 – 2011), Impreza (2004 – 2011), Forester (2009 – 2012), Legacy (2005 – 2014), Outback (2005 – 2014) and Tribeca (2005-2011).

To list each manufacturer and every model effected so far by the Takata airbag recall will take up this entire newspaper, with a big brand such as Nissan sitting on 4.4 million vehicles effected so far, across its entire product range.
