Empangeni residents’ fury over noise pollution

‘This lawlessness in a residential area is totally unacceptable'

A LOCAL hangout spot in Empangeni is becoming a nuisance for annoyed ratepayers who have once again raised the issue of noise pollution in the area.

Last week the ZO was contacted by two irate residents who complained about all-night partying at the premises opposite Game in Addison Street, which fronts as an Internet Café during the day, but becomes a popular hangout spot at night.

One resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, said loud music blasts into the early hours of the mornings over weekends.

‘I feel helpless. If I go to the police they won’t do anything because it’s over the weekend. What are we paying rates and taxes for?

‘This lawlessness in a residential area is totally unacceptable.

‘I am not opposed to people playing loud music, just not in an area where people live and are trying to sleep.’

In a letter addressed to the Municipal Manager in December, the Chairman of the In-house Committee at Leisure Gardens, Ray Peyters, also raised the issue about the premises in question.

‘On Friday, 15 December 2017 I again received desperate pleas from residents of Leisure Gardens as the earth was shaking from 6pm,’ Peyters wrote.

‘Once again the night club near Game Stores was blasting away with boisterous music.

‘I phoned the SAPS but never got any replies from their emergency numbers.

‘Eventually I got hold of Constable Sikhakhane and I told her my reason for calling.

‘She suggested I phone the municipal officer, Superintendent Selby Luthuli.

‘After 10pm I did so and requested that he take the necessary action as per the municipal by-laws.

‘The next morning Mr Luthuli phoned me to make an appointment to meet him and two of his uniformed officers and we investigated the premises of the offenders and discussed a way forward.

‘It would appear that the premises is being used as a multi-purpose operation, housing quite a few activities.’

Despite numerous attempts, the ZO was unable to reach the owners of the premises for comment, while the municipality has not responded at the time of going to print.
