Unisa students to register online as strike continues

The university encouraged students to continue registering online after workers affiliated to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) embarked on a nationwide strike last week Wednesday

UNISA’s Richards Bay campus remained closed to the public on Wednesday as negotiations to end a week-long strike continued.

The university encouraged students to continue registering online after workers affiliated to the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) embarked on a nationwide strike last week Wednesday.

‘Unisa is in the middle of a strike and discussions between the union, management and the CCMA are in progress,’ the university said in a statement.

‘We will inform you (students) of the progress of discussions. Please register online while negotiations are taking place. The registration closing date has been extended to 30 January.’

Workers are demanding a salary increase of 12% across the board, but management is offering 6.5%.

‘Our members at the university are sick and tired of being taken for granted by the university management and they are willing to go on a full-blown strike indefinitely until the demands are met.,’ Nehawu said.

‘Workers will not return to work until the university management sorts out the salary dispute and the absorption on a full time basis of all workers on contract since 2014 in the ICT department,’ Nehawu said.
