Donate a pencil and put a smile on a child’s face

The stationery drive will run from 12 to 31 January

IN an effort to send as many underprivileged children as possible to school with the right ‘tools’ to get them off to a good start, Amangwe Village has teamed up with Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre and is holding a stationery drive starting tomorrow (Friday).

Members of the public are encouraged to donate items of stationery by placing them in the boxes at Woolworths (Boardwalk Inkwazi Information and Tourism Hub), and at Boardmans on the lower level.

The stationery drive is running until month-end.

‘It is not easy for many of the children in our area to go back to school, as they are in dire need of stationery to start the new school year,’ said Amangwe Village Manager, Erna Steynberg.

‘Children walk long distances in all weather conditions to the closest school and stationery will make the long walk worthwhile.

‘The stationery will be distributed to children from Grade R to Grade 12 who are in foster care, orphaned and vulnerable, children whose parents are too sick to work to earn an income, support groups for children and children in child-headed households.’

Amangwe Village is an NPO operating in the municipal boundaries of Mfolozi Municipality (KwaMbonambi) implementing programmes that build the capacity of individuals to be self-reliant and independent.

The services focus on early childhood development, home-based care for patients and their families in the community, women empowerment – building the capacity of women to care for their families, food security by training community members to grow their own food gardens, and services to orphaned and vulnerable children.

These services include a life skills club for boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 17.

‘Members of the Amangwe girls’ and boys’ clubs will be at the Boardwalk on 19 and 26 January to meet with you and receive your kind donations.

‘In the meantime, you are welcome to place the stationery in the boxes at the places allocated by Boardwalk Management,’ said Steynberg.
