Youngsters receive graduation certificates
About 38 children in the township were awarded with certificates of attendance after attending music classes since September
RENOWNED musician Sibongile Khumalo has urged parents to allow their children to attend music classes which will help them to stay humble and be well nurtured.
Khumalo was speaking at the Khongisa Academy for the Performing Arts graduation ceremony held at the weekend at Vulindlela township.
‘I believe music is the only vehicle that can bring people closer to God. Even though not all of them will make it big in the music industry, the knowledge gained would enable them to become better leaders in whatever field of work they choose,’ she said.
About 38 children in the township were awarded with certificates of attendance after attending music classes since September.
‘Performing arts is like any other sport. It instills humanity within the participants. This is just one of the benefits they will reap from attending classes,’she said.
The school was established by the late Professor Khabi Mngoma, who was a music lecturer at the University of Zululand.
Professor Mngoma established the academy as an outreach programme to help disadvantaged people who were keen on playing musical instruments.
School Principal Emmanuel Dube said the academy will soon expand.
‘We are opening again on 3 February next year. So we will group our students according to their school grades and also register them with Unisa so that they are able to write the same exams as other students.
‘The enrolment is free, we don’t charge for anything,’ said Dube.
Anyone willing to make a donation to the institution can contact Dube on 071 7236456.
