Tough talk by local police chief

'We are here to talk about eradicating crime completely'

EMPANGENI Station Commander, Brigadier Jeros Thango, says although the crime rate in Empangeni has dropped, the police will not ‘be letting up just yet’.

This assurance was given by the local police chief at a public crime meeting last week where concerned residents had the opportunity of engaging with him with at the Empangeni Town Hall.

Thango revealed that crime in Empangeni has dropped drastically, but said the police would not be resting on their laurels.

‘When I arrived in Empangeni the crime rate was very high. We had at least four house robberies a day and on top of that many hijackings.

‘Crime has since decreased, but we are not here to talk about decreasing crime, we are here to talk about eradicating crime completely,’ Thango said.

‘The members of Empangeni police station have come on board with me and are working hard, but we firmly believe that we cannot do anything without the involvement of the community. We need you to do our jobs effectively.’

Six months after his appointment, Thango said his team have arrested some of the most wanted suspects in the area.

‘We still have suspects that we are chasing and we will not stop until they are behind bars.

He noted that SAPS have received support from the provincial cluster to ensure that crime does not escalate this festive season.

‘We have extra manpower deployed from province so that we can curb crime during this festive season. ‘We also have the backing of the judicial system and will work closely with magistrates and prosecutors to ensure we get convictions.

Thango made specific reference to drugs within communities and and said it was the responsibility of every citizen to report cases.
