Neglected community demands action
Community leader Muzi Msane said they were concerned about the level of service delivery, which he said was moving at a snail’s pace since the dawn of democracy in 1994
INFURIATED by the lack of service delivery, Ngwavuma communities marched to Mosvold Hospital, demanding that both the Jozini Municipality and uMkhanyakude District Municipality provide them with a clear plan to improve their lives.
Community leader Muzi Msane said they were concerned about the level of service delivery, which he said was moving at a snail’s pace since the dawn of democracy in 1994.
‘Our frustration is directed at these two municipalities. We feel neglected. ‘After all these years we still don’t have a shopping mall. We don’t have water, in fact we are sharing it with the animals.
‘We also don’t have electricity. Some of us can’t even afford to build houses of our own. We remain the most underdeveloped community in the country.’
Msane said they were also concerned about the conduct of a company contracted to Mosvold Hospital.
‘We want the company, which offers cleaning and security services, to give its employees one year contracts so as to make way for other people to also get a piece of the pie,’ he said.
Msane handed over a memorandum of grievances to representatives of both municipalities and gave them seven days to respond.
‘If they don’t, we’ll request MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nomusa Dube, to intervene.’
uMkhanyakude District Municipality spokesperson Mduduzi Dlamini said issues pertaining to the lack of water in the area are being addressed.
‘We have invested about R25-million to get this project off the ground and which will be completed in phases. We can guarantee our people that they will get clean, potable water.
‘This project itself will be beneficial to local communities by means of job op- portunities, which will be created in the process.
‘We have completed a R4,5-million sewerage project in that area.’
