Additional charge added to alleged hit man’s rap sheet

The murder accused was traced to Soweto where he was arrested 10 days ago

THE man accused of murdering former Mtubatuba councillor, Bongani Msomi, yesterday (Wednesday) made his second court appearance and was remanded in custody to appear again next week for bail application.

The 29-year-old man, whose identity cannot yet be published, was traced to Diepkloof in Soweto where he was arrested 10 days ago.

Soon after his arrest, he was positively identified in an identity parade and charged with murder.

At yesterday’s court appearance at Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court, an additional charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm was added by KwaMsane SAPS and that case transferred to Mtubatuba court.

The case was adjourned to 1 December and the suspect remanded in custody at Mtubatuba police cells.

The emotionally charged courtroom was packed with Msomi’s family and friends who said they just want justice.

While a motive for the murder is yet to be established, investigations are ongoing and police officers are following further leads and expecting more arrests.

Early last month, while attending a cultural festival in Mtubatuba hosted by the Mtubatuba Municipality, Msomi was shot ‘execution-style’ in the forehead by someone who, as described by witnesses, appeared to hug him before shooting him.

He died instantly and his body was taken to the Mtubatuba state mortuary.
