Pray for peace and stability in Zimbabwe

Last week’s sudden turn of events in Zimbabwe instantly became world headline news. Though denied to be a military coup, it bears all the resemblance of such and in any event, the military are firmly in control.
While overseas media may view this as just another breaking political story, for us it has far more serious overtones.
What happens on all our neighbours’ borders impacts – at least potentially – on our lives.
We need to enjoy good relationships with all our neighbours in the interests of political stability, cross-border trade, tourism, agriculture and a host of other positive links, functions and opportunities.
What happens now in Zimbabwe in terms of the transition to a new dispensation is critical, and we must pray the situation develops peacefully.
Vague reference to ‘enemies’ close to President Mugabe who must be kept in check, are unnerving.
So far, all is peaceful on the streets, and this must continue. South Africa – and by this we mean our political leaders and others with influence – must do all in our power to
help prevent a civil war or any form of purging from taking place.
We need to pray and work for peace, not just for the sake of the families of the many Zimbabweans who work and reside in our country, but also so that nothing negative may spill over the border.
All over the world, countless thousands have been driven out of or have been forced to flee their country under political duress or internal conflict.
The burden of refugees is a heavy one, both for those who flee and the countries where they seek asylum.
Zimbabwe, like South Africa, is a beautiful country. Its people are friendly and its resources and potential wealth are great.
Under the right government it can prosper and bless its citizens. We pray this will be the peaceful outcome.
