Charges pending after u-turn accidents

Last week, BayWatch Eyethu reported that an Mpumalanga biker, Ockie Brits (52), had died on the N2 near the Empangeni interchange, after colliding with a car witnesses said was making a U-turn on the national road

COURT prosecutors will decide the future of two drivers whose actions were reportedly the cause of recent high profile accidents by making U-turns in two separate incidents.

Last week, BayWatch Eyethu reported that an Mpumalanga biker, Ockie Brits (52), had died on the N2 near the Empangeni interchange, after colliding with a car witnesses said was making a U-turn on the national road.

They also alleged the driver of the vehicle fled the scene after jumping into another vehicle.

In the second incident two weeks ago, Kobus Van Wyk (41), manager at uMlathuze Pharmacy, was involved in a motorbike accident and left permanently paralysed after he reportedly rode into a bakkie doing a U-turn close to Empangeni High School.

Speaking to the ZO, King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said both dockets will be sent to the local public prosecutor.

‘With regard to Mr Brits’ case, the investigating officer has obtained a statement from his family, a witness and the driver of the vehicle that was reported to have been doing a U-turn on the N2.

‘We are still awaiting a statement from Mr Van Wyk, but the investigating officer has obtained a statement from the driver in that case.’

‘Both dockets will be sent to the public prosecutor in the area, who will determine further action.

‘Only then will we know if the drivers will be formally charged for culpable homicide,’ he told the ZO.
