Richards Bay brawlers strike again

A case of assault is being investigated

TWO men were beaten up at Tuzi Gazi Waterfront late on Friday night, reportedly involving brawlers involved in a similar assault earlier in the year.

The incident occurred at about midnight when one victim, who asked to remain anonymous, arrived at the waterfront venue after having attended a previous function.

‘I was waiting at the bar to order a drink when I suddenly saw someone grab a young guy, about 19 or 20 years old, by the throat, hold him up and threaten to kill him.’

‘Initially I ignored the situation and someone else told them to go outside.

‘Another big guy then walked in and the two took the youngster outside.

‘Because the guy who was being threatened was so young and so much smaller than his assailants, I decided to go outside and intervene.

‘I told them to leave the youngster alone and rather fight someone their own size.’

He then took a fist to the side of his head, and that is the last thing he remembers.

While one punch knocked him unconscious, the injuries tell a tale of someone who was beaten while down, as he suffered a split lip and bleeding nose, for both of which he received stitches, a level three concussion and a deep blue bruise on his chest.

‘I am not a small guy, so they must have hit and kicked me pretty hard after I had passed out.

‘This has happened too many times and these guys must be held accountable.

‘I have opened an assault case and intend to take this as far as I can,’

Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer Debbie Ferreira confirmed that a case of assault common was opened on Saturday morning.

‘Investigating officers are working on the case and are gathering statements,’ she said.

‘Once all victim and witness statements have been collected, the case will be passed to the state prosecutor who will then decide whether or not to prosecute.’

While the younger man could not be reached by the ZO to hear his story, he reportedly also suffered fairly extensive injuries, including having lost some teeth.

According to his Facebook page, he has also opened a police case.
